How Journal Indexes builds and checks its data

Journal Indexes holds 52,299 journal records. Each journal's indexing status was compiled from the latest updates of open sources, is matched to the journal mainly by ISSN, and carries the date it reflects. To confirm any fact, check the official index: the links are on the Sources page. We do not rate, rank or label journals ourselves. Where we add a figure of our own, such as a fee median or a count of ended coverage, the page says how it was computed.

How a journal gets its page

  • A journal has a page if at least one source lists it, now or in the past: Scopus, Web of Science, ABDC, ABS, FT50, UT Dallas or DOAJ. The address is the journal name plus its ISSN.
  • Journals already in the dataset are updated at each refresh, and titles an index has newly listed are added in a separate step, so a new title can take until the next build to appear.
  • Membership is set and cleared at each refresh. A journal removed from a list loses that flag; what changed is published on Index changes.
  • Manual corrections live in a separate overrides file that is applied last, so a correction survives the next refresh.

What the numbers mean, and what we do not hold

  • Quartile is the Scopus CiteScore quartile in the journal's best subject area. The quartile in each other subject is shown on the journal page.
  • Impact factor: we do not hold Journal Impact Factors, which Clarivate licenses. We show Scopus CiteScore, SCImago SJR and OpenAlex 2-year mean citations, each named as what it is. Any "impact factor" quoted elsewhere for a journal outside Web of Science is not the official metric.
  • Publication fee is the open access list price recorded by OpenAlex. It excludes waivers, discounts and national deals, and many journals also publish by a subscription route at no cost to the author.
  • OpenAlex figures are pulled in bulk about once a month, not on each visit, and are shown only where OpenAlex has a record for the journal.
  • "Likely dormant": a journal Scopus lists as Active that has indexed no new content for several years is flagged as likely dormant. That flag is our own reading of the Scopus coverage years, and the page says so.

What we do not do

  • We do not call any journal predatory. We show where a journal is indexed and what each index says; the checker guide explains the warning signs and where the official lists are.
  • No journal or publisher can pay for a listing, a rank or a position on any page.
  • We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Scopus, Clarivate, ABDC, the Chartered ABS, the Financial Times, UT Dallas, DOAJ or ONOS. This is a lookup aid, not an official index. Confirm any decision on the official source.
  • Comments from visitors on journal pages are personal opinions, are not checked for accuracy, and never change the indexing facts.

Questions people ask

How does Journal Indexes match a journal across different lists?

Mainly by ISSN, print or online. The ABDC and ABS lists fall back to the title when a journal's ISSN differs from the one held here, for example after a rename or relaunch. Scopus CiteScore is matched by Scopus source ID.

Does Journal Indexes show Journal Impact Factors?

No. Journal Impact Factors are licensed by Clarivate. The site reports Scopus CiteScore, SCImago SJR and OpenAlex 2-year mean citations instead, and names each as what it is.

How current is the data?

Each page states the date of the index lists it was checked against. The current data build is dated 4 October 2026. Index status changes only when a new dataset is built, and what changed at each build is published on the Index changes page.

What if a journal page is wrong?

Write to contact@journalindexes.com or use the contact page. We check the claim against the official index, and a manual correction is stored separately so that it is not lost at the next refresh.
